Boards Up in 5th Grade

"BOARDS UP" IN FIFTH GRADE
Spelling is a skill that should be acquired by bilingual children in order to be completely immersed in the language. In order to practice their spelling skills the 5ºD students recently played the game “Boards Up”. To play Boards Up the students each have an individual white board where they must write the word previously said by the teacher. By doing this, it allows the teachers to see who is able to spell a word correctly and who isn't. Besides, it was also helpful for students to see their own mistakes and to improve with their skill development. It a quick, efficent, active and fun game but it was also a way to learn!

Draw and Guess in 3rd Grade

"DRAW AND GUESS" ACTIVITY

To review the unit vocabulary our students played "Draw and Guess". The teacher picks a student from each group and shows them a flashcard. As the students are drawing the others raise their hands and guess what the picture is. The first student who spell the word correctly gets to draw the next picture.

Alkor's First Annual Spelling Bee

COLEGIO ALKOR'S FIRST ANNUAL SPELLING BEE

This year Colegio Alkor organized its first schoolwide spelling bee. Students from third, fouth, fifth and sixth grade were able to participate. First representatives were chosen from each class and those representatives competed against each other within their grade. The students from each grade level were quizzed on a variety of words in English by Alkor's Spellmaster and current auxiliar de conversación, Melinda Merola. The students in the audience were very supportive of their classmates and showed their enthusiasm continuously throughout the event. The winners from each grade went on to compete in Madrid at the second annual FACEPM Spelling Bee. One of our students was the city wide winner, Claudia Mateos. See her story here.

Weekly Spelling Practice in Second Grade

WEEKLY SPELLING PRACTICE IN SECOND GRADE

Every week in second grade the students practice spelling with a variety of special activities. One of the most popular is the spelling box. Each student chooses a card with a spelling word from the box and he or she must try to spell the word correctly. His or her classmates try to guess the word. Sometimes the class even spilts into groups to make the game more competitive. The spelling box is a more interactive way to help teach our second graders improve their spelling and writing skills in English. Click below to see exactly how second grade is playing the game!
