SCIENCE PROJECT-CUERPO HUMANO

We love working together! During this term we have learnt about our body in our science class. Now it is the time to learn all this important vocabulary in our mother tongue. We have made these amazing posters using all our knowledge but in this time it was in spanish. We enjoy a lot doing it with our classmates.

Learn to fly!

A DIFFERENT ACTIVITY FOR HALLOWEEN TIME!!!

One day, looking at our Art and Craft book, we saw an interesting activity for Halloween:  we could create fantastic comic characters and stories about them.  Our students of 6th grade invented the main character and they wrote a name for him: "Black Bird Man".

We divided the whole work into different groups of work  and drew Black Bird's Man's family and friends, his house, his refuge, his weapons and his story in general.

We did a cooperative activity, working in groups, talking about what they had to do step by step. With this activity, students changed their behaviour and increased their motivation.

Halloween gymkhana in 6th grade

HALLOWEEN GYMKANA IN 6TH GRADE

This year our six graders had a fun challenge. At recess all 140 pupils were divided into mixed groups for their afternoon activity, a gyhmkana. They had to earn a stamp from each activity cooperating together. There were 5 activities in total. Treasure hunt, the spiderweb, wrap the mummy, unscramble the word and “let me take a selfie”.
This last activity was great. Our students had to get on the floor and create a letter with their bodies and after that take a selfie of all the group members. Look how well they did it and how great it all came out!

School's International Day of Peace 2015 at Colegio Alkor

International Day of Peace 2015
This year Colegio Alkor took part in the International Day of Peace for schools with our annual, outdoor ceremony. Our first graders spelled the word "paz" with their bodies by arranging themselves on the patio and the other grades stood around them. We heard a special message from the director and select students spoke about peace in different languages. Finally, we sang songs about peace in both English and Spanish.

Preparing for Race Day: 6th Graders Create Balloon Powered Cars

Preparing for Race Day:
Sixth Graders Create Balloon Powered Cars!

This term our sixth graders started designing and constructing balloon powered race cars in their desdoble English classes. This is a typical group project that many American students work on in primary or secondary school. Our students are working in groups of three or four to design a vehicle that is lightweight enough to move by the power produced by the deflating ballon that is attached to the top of the car. The students are encouraged to design, build, test and rebuild to create the fastest car in the their class. It reinforces our students' teamwork skills while using English and requires them to learn via trial and error. Race day will be in the beginning of February and we can't wait to find out who the winners are!

The Grinch Steals Christmas at Colegio Alkor!

"How The Grinch Stole Christmas" at Colegio Alkor!
The Grinch preparing to "steal" Christmas!
For the holiday season this year the native assistants performed a dramatic reading of Dr. Suess' famous story "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". The story is about a monster called the Grinch who wants to ruin the holiday season for the creatures, Whos, living in the town below. The Grinch steals all of the food, presents and decorations from the Whos, but they are still able to happily celebrate Christmas. Then the Grinch learns that Christmas is not just about material things but is a holiday about being with the people you love.

Our auxiliares, Satia and Alisa, narrated the story, James (an auxiliar in ESO) played the part of the Grinch, Gina played the part of Cindy Lou, Sophia played the part of the Grinch's dog, Max, Melinda controlled the sound and images and Melissa (from ESO) helped us with lights. We also had very special help from some of our primary students in the audience who helped the actors onstage.

Thanksgiving Cornucopia in 6th Grade

THANKSGIVING CORNUCOPIA IN SIXTH GRADE
Our sixth graders learned about the American tradition of cornucopias (the horn of plenty) this Thanksgiving. They are large, horn-shaped baskets that are typically filled with fruit, vegetables, flowers and nuts. Cornucopias are an important symbol of Thanksgiving for many Americans because they represent abundance and nourishment.

Our students designed and decorated a variety of foods to include in the sixth grade cornucopia. Each piece also contained a sentence that explained what the students are thankful for, usually family or friends. :)

Each grade was given a type of Halloween character to create like mummies, pumpkins, Frankensteins, spiders, zombies and skeletons. The best 3-4 pieces of art from each class were chosen to help decorate a big Halloween scene that was displayed in the entrance to the primary building. Writing Letters in 6th Grade

WRITING LETTERS IN SIXTH GRADE

The past few weeks our sixth graders have been practicing their letter writing skills in English class in order to prepare for the KET exam at the end of the year. Their first assignment was to write a letter to their future selves. Once they were finished, they had to make an envelope and put the letter inside. They will open their letters in June 2015 and will have the opportunity to see how they have changed over the past nine months. They had to write about their current life, their strengths and weaknesses and their goals for the upcoming year. Check out the videos below to see some of our sixth graders at work!
